Career Exploration

Louisiana Delta Community College Career Services is dedicated to helping you make informed decisions about your career choices. The Career Exploration process can be broken down into several manageable steps which will assist you in making a well informed decision about your future.

  • Assess Yourself
Think about the answers to the following questions to begin the career exploration process.
    • What do I truly enjoy? (Interests)
    • What am I good at? (Skills)
    • What is really important to me? (Values)
  • Investigate the World of Work
Make lists of the careers you are interested in and research each one. Here are some things to keep in mind as you complete your research:
    • What is the nature of the work?
    • What is the work environment?
    • What is the typical salary range associated with this work?
    • What education, training and special certifications are required for this work?
    • What are some careers related to this work which may be of interest to me?
    • How does this career fit in with my interests, skills and values?
    • What is the current (and future) job market for this career?
  • Evaluate Your Options
    • Put together the information you have collected
    • Consider what you have learned
    • Weigh the pros and cons of each option
    • Narrow your list down to two or three majors
    • Talk with an advisor or career counselor who can hlep you evaluate the information you have collected, suggest additional resources, and guide you through the decision-making process.
  • Set a Goal and Make an Action Plan
    • A career goal will help you establish what is important and will provide direction
    • Establishing a career goal will help you focus your energy
    • Set short and long-term career goals
    • Put your plan into action and continue to move forward
