LDCC Invests in New Air Treatment System at All Campuses

air handler with sterilizing UV ligts

Louisiana Delta Community College began installing Steril-Aire's Enhanced Single Ended Fixtures to provide an even more extensive measure in killing bacteria and inactivating viruses on its campuses. Air is pulled into several air handlers, where it is then sterilized by UVC lights and distributed back throughout the campus.

The entire UV spectrum can kill or inactivate many microorganism species, preventing them from replicating. UVC exposure inactivates microbial organisms such as bacteria and viruses by altering the structure and the molecular bonds of their DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is a "blueprint" these organisms use to develop, function, and reproduce. By destroying the organism's ability to reproduce, it becomes harmless. After UVC exposure, the organism dies off, leaving no offspring, and the population of the microorganism diminishes rapidly.

"These lights have been documented for over 100 years and have been used in hospitals and nursing homes. Since the onset of COVID-19, they have been made widely accessible to additional markets," explains Randy Wilkerson, Director of Facilities at LDCC. "I'm excited to have these. I don't know of any other area educational institution that have these installed."

Of course, students are returning to campus with reminders of what you can see with your eyes: social distancing, wearing masks, and frequent hand washing. Now, they have an additional safeguard from something that they cannot see with their natural eyes-UVC protection. "Our students' and employees' safety and wellbeing are paramount," says LDCC Chancellor Dr. Scott Rule. "We're continuously looking for ways to improve our safety measures. I want everyone to feel comfortable on our campuses knowing their safety is our priority."
