Neighbors Helping Neighbors: LDCC Welding Program Helps Community Beautification in Settler’s Point

Tallulah, LA – In a powerful example of community collaboration, Louisiana Delta Community College (LDCC) and the Settler’s Point Homeowners Association (HOA) recently joined forces to create a new metal sign for the Poverty Point Community. This collaboration highlights the impact local partnerships can have on neighborhoods and educational programs.

The connection between LDCC and Settler’s Point began when Sharon Bowman, LDCC’s eLearning Coordinator and a member of the Beautification Committee, recommended LDCC Tallulah Welding Instructor Phillip Henson for the project. Henson provided the craftsmanship and heavy lifting required to bring the sign to life. LDCC Tallulah welding students also lent a hand while Henson constructed the metal sign, adding to the various projects demonstrated during their training. The result is a beautifully structured, steel monument at the intersection of Comanche Trail and Poverty Point Parkway.

Initial bids for the project were estimated at $20,000. However, LDCC’s involvement in the fabrication of the sign helped cut the cost to less than half of the quoted amount, allowing the Settler’s Point HOA to meet budgetary requirements to complete the project. “This project is a great example of what can be accomplished when neighbors come together to support their community,” said Henson. “It’s not just about building a sign – it’s about building connections and creating something that will last.”

The project also received significant support from various local businesses and community members, who contributed donations and materials to make the project a reality. The Settler’s Point Beautification Committee expressed deep gratitude to everyone involved for their hard work and generosity.

LDCC remains committed to serving the community across the Northeast Region of Louisiana, providing hands-on training for its students while supporting the places many call home.
