Program Description

The Associate of Science in Teaching is a 60-credit hour program for students who wish to teach elementary grade students, grades 1-5. The AST degree is fully transferable to four-year colleges of education in Louisiana, and successful completion of the degree enables recipients to enter a four-year college of education program with half of their certification requirements complete and all general education requirements met. In addition to general education courses, students will complete two professional education courses that include associated fieldwork experience.

All courses applied to the degree must be passed with a ‘C’ or better. Developmental courses will not be applied to the degree. To benefit from the transfer guarantees at four-year universities, students must earn the AST degree prior to transferring and have at least a 2.50 unadjusted cumulative grade point average.

Students who enter a four-year public university with an AS-Teaching in hand will have met the institution's general education requirements and will be granted upper division (junior) status, with all of its concomitant rights and privileges. This guarantee applies to those who successfully complete the degree with a 2.5 GPA or better upon completion. Students who are awarded an AST degree will complete with 60 credit hours and will need to complete an additional 60 credit hours at their university of choice in order to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education and be certified to teach in Louisiana.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Louisiana Delta Community College Teaching program will be able to:
